wednesday evening i took the train down to Williamsburg to see Big Terrific at a club called Cameo. Dawson forwarned me that the “L” train was the “hipster” train and i should prepare myself for what i might see. sadly, i didn’t see anything unusual. i don’t know what i was expecting, exactly.
Cameo is an art installation (learned all of this after the fact) that is starting to do shows on a regular basis. the adverts said it was “behind Lovin’ Cup restaurant” and they were not even kidding. like…walk through the kitchen behind Lovin’ Cup. it’s a small room…smaller than i expected…but it was packed by the time the show started.
This picture is me with the hosts Max Silvestri and Gabe Liedman. Max was quite tickled (not literally) that i came from KS specifically wanting to see Big Terrific. he asked how i found out, and explained my course of discovery went as follows:
236.com -> Huffpost Comedy Page -> Videogum -> Gabe and Max -> Gabe and Jenny -> Big Terrific
Max and i chatted for over an hour about comedy writing. Gabe gave me his unused drink tickets. everyone was super nice and cool (in fact, this guy Jed invited me to a party he was throwing the next night) and the only bummer was that i was hoping to meet the Gabe from Videogum…but still a pretty unbelievable night. the nyc comedy scene is tighter than you might think…which is just awesome. if you can, go see Big Terrific. it’s every wednesday. it’s free. google it.
i was sitting right next to the stage so i was a little embarrased about taking pics…so most of them are blurry. sorry about that.

that has GOT to hurt. you can see it in his face… (admittedly i’ve created an entire imaginary scenario around this (these) photos, but i’m going with it)

We saw Louis CK last Sunday. He was superb as always. All new material…all great stuff. Still a dead heat between Louis and Patton for best working comedian today. My camera is not great in low light, but we were 6 rows back on the aisle (thanks Beth!). Total Bonus Points: his unannounced opener was Todd Barry!

WONDER-TONIC: In Xanadu Did Kubla Khan A Stately PowerPoint Decree
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately PowerPoint decree:
For VP of Logistics, Stan
And key stakeholders of the plan
For scaling in Q3.So ninety slides so media-rich
With animations on every switch.
And here were slides rife with sinuous clip art
Where blossomed many a stick figure with a key;…
This is hilarious if:
A. You’ve sat though too many power point business presentations
B. You’re a fan of the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (or in my case, a fan of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” by Douglas Adams)
C. The (I’m assuming) slim demographic of Poetry Majors that became Project Managers.
